Every once in a while, Nomad Papa does something to redeem himself. This past weekend he offered to take the girls out for the day. This break could not have come at a better time. I desperately needed to get ready for the big book launch. He had just been away for two days and needed some valuable one-on-one time with the little wins.
Two hours, four changes of clothes and innumerable tantrums later, we finally had everyone in the car. Nomad Papa and the girls were off to the zoo. I was off to Starbacchio for some writing and latte time. We were just about ready to pull out of the driveway when Giorgie piped up from the backseat.
“I’m STARVING mommy!”
Seatbelts back off, door opens, footsteps dash up the stairs, fumbling for the key, racing through the house, digging in the cabinet, grabbing the perfect snack, all of that in reverse until back to the car. Thankfully, I had a full box of Barny bear cakes stashed away for just such a moment. The girls inhaled their sponge cakes, barely pausing long enough to let mommy snap a photo. (I was going to need something to tide me over while they were away.)
A slow drive a mile down the road (Nomad Papa drives like a grandma…a dead grandma. In fact, I think a live grandma actually lapped us on the road), door opens, goodbye waves and kissed, door slams and then FREEDOM! F-R-E-E-D-O-M!
I spent the morning writing blog posts, reading facebook and twitter, avoiding the pinterest time-suck and knocking my excitement on the head when it threatened to post a “I’m in a book!” message on social media.
Meanwhile, over at the zoo…
The kids and Nomad Papa had a great time at the Cotswold Wildlife Park. The girls had been three times before and really enjoyed showing their dad all of the favorite animals and activities. They got up close and personal with the giraffes, marvelled over the running rhinos, roared with the lions and took inspiration from the monkeys when hanging from the monkey bars.
The Barny snacks provided just the right amount of energy to carry them straight through to lunch. They arrived back home in the midafternoon, bursting with stories to tell to dear old mom. And, above all, ready to eat another Barny cake.
Now where did I put that box?
(This post is an entry for BritMums ‘Winter Little Adventures Challenge’ sponsored by Barny, individually wrapped bear-shaped sponges with a hidden filling. Find out more about Barny.)
