If you’re not a writer like me, trying to find the words to tell your kids all the things you want them to know can be hard. And since you’re a mom, trying to find the time to put down whatever words you do have is even harder. There are a million and one things I want/need to tell my kids but I don’t know where to start.
Most of the advice I have in my head is stuff they don’t need to know for another (hopefully) 10-15 years. Things like “This is what a tramp stamp looks like after two kids,” or “If he doesn’t call you the next day then that’s HIS problem,” or “No, I won’t give you an extra $50 for your beer fund.” Being the natural comedian I think I am, it is hard to remember to rein it in and write something they can appreciate now.
My friend Tara gave me the idea of using the One Day video app to record a message rather than writing one. It turned out to be a brilliant idea. They have LOADS of prompts for parent videos – questions about growing up, school, your family, key pieces of advice and more. It helps to keep you on track and then compiles your footage into a cute little film.
Tonight I poured myself a glass of Dutch courage, hightailed it to the laundry room where I could get some peace and quiet and started recording. It was super easy and since the main audience is my kids, and let’s face it, they have to love me anyways, it doesn’t matter that you can tell that my nose is stuffed up or that I’m wearing a crappy t-shirt. I’m mommy and I’m letting them learn a bit more about who I am.
The app I used is FREE, so there is no reason why you shouldn’t download it right now. You can wait for the weekend to start your video messages or use the holiday time to make new videos for the grandparents instead. There are special Thanksgiving themes options in there as well.
